Father of UCF football Gene McDowell dies at age 80

McDowell, 75, wore many hats — figuratively and literally — during his tenure at UCF from 1985-1997. Aside from being a hard-nosed coach, he was a deft athletics director, a slick negotiator, a shrewd campus politician, a gardener, and a loyal friend. Now, with the support of boosters and friends, McDowell is formally being recognized as a UCF legend.
